Podcasts:

What is a Podcast? What can it do for me? Why should I bother? These are great questions and ones I have asked myself in the past. A podcast is essentially "a digital audio file made available on the internet for downloading to a computer or portable media player, typically available as a series, new installments of which can be received by subscribers automatically." Before I was familiar with podcasts, I had heard of TED Talks. TED talks are short (10 -15 minutes) presentations on topics covering the gambit - name a topic and you'll find a TED Talk about it; they are informative and entertaining; they are easy to listen to with an impactful message; they are easy to share on social media as the files are not large; they are podcasts. Once I realized TED Talks were podcasts, I realized I was familiar with podcasts and I that already enjoyed them and saw the benefit of them.

Many podcasts are simply audio files. TED Talks can usually be found in video format as well. However, the audio link is available independent on itunes. I have added a link to a particular TED Talk that I enjoyed discussing the need for students to have an end-goal or an idea of what it is they want to do with their life as they enter college. There are numerous podcasts that deal with college searches and the college application process. These can be great resources to parents and students as they begin a college search. But, it is important to remember that the end goal is to get a degree that will allow one to work in a field or profession that gives them meaning in life! One may have the grades and resume necessary to be accepted at an ivy league school - but if their goals is to be an artist, then that school choice doesn't make sense. I'm including this link for two reasons: first, because I think it has a great message that should thought about prior to any college search, and 2) because it drives home the power of podcasts. They might be short, they might be boring at times, but they can be a HUGE resource!!!
